The More the Merrier: a guide to layering

 Layering is Key.

It is easy just to throw on a dress or a pair of jeans and a top and walk out the door but a truly interesting outfit desires layers. Now we are not just talking about shirt, vest, cardigan kind of layering, but also accessory layering. Right now we might want to practice light layering because of the weather but once the fall breeze kicks in these looks will be your go-to's. These days there is no better way to express yourself than through fashion. All looks go in today's society. If you are into the tailored, more preppy/ professional look you can jump on board with the blazer, tailored shorts, trousers, belted waistlines, peter pan collars and oxfords. If you want to embrace your artsy side you can reach for the chunky sweaters, over sized bags, scarves, and zany colors schemes. Or if your like me you can give them all a try, no ones keeping score! Here are some pictures that I found inspiration in, hope you will too, try something new this week!

Basic button up shirt with a loose pull over sweater, pearls, leggings and oxfords
(Go for an abstract color for the purse or accessories!)

This just looks so cozy and chic at the same time, layer the gold jewelry on one wrist.

Oversized bags are part of the ensemble, opaque tights and booties are the best!

Sheer sweater with a tank underneath = classy to the max, belted high waisted skirt.

Billowy sage blouse tucked into a lace pencil skirt, layered gold bracelets on the wrist.

Layering to the max!Infinity scarf, tank, jean button up, stacked bracelets, lace shorts.

Tailored high waisted pants, tucked in sleeveless blouse.

Beanies! Such a great fall/winter outfit
Peacoat, tights, pleated skirt.

Blazers are the best and class up any outfit!

Have fun with color!

Add a sheer sweater over a button up shirt, the color looks great with shorter necklaces. These shorts make the outfit, such a great color!

Pulling. It. Off.

Renewal week is upon us and I see no reason why we can't work on renewing our styles as well as our souls. I have some great examples of perfected Point Loma fashion here from friends around campus. We are still awaiting fall so getting dressed in the morning might be causing you some frustration. As we all know Point Loma should have a weather forecast all of its own due to unreliable predictions in the past. But take heart and utilize layers! Throw a cardigan over a t-shirt, or some tights under a skirt or pair of shorts.

This week I am really appreciating the skirt lengths I am seeing. The midi or a skirt that falls to your mid-calf is on its way back into the fashion scene, as well as the maxi (full length skirt) which we have been seeing for a few months now. I am always in awe of people that take risks in fashion, when you throw together stripes and florals or a muted top with statement bottoms. I especially stop and stare when I see something fabulous that I would have never come up with! Vests and over sized, sleeveless cardigans are such a great accessory to add to any outfit. I am also a big fan of necklace layering, if you can't decide which necklace to wear no worries, wear both! The high waisted silhouette is being see in everyday wear and I am so jazzed about that! It is a classic look that is making a comeback and is very flattering to most body types.

Go through your closet and discover something that you forgot about or have never had the guts to wear! Use some of these pictures and tips to put together a new bold outfit. Start layering your garments in new color and print combinations that you have never tried! Always remember to dress for YOUR body type not for the body type that society is advertising. The perfect styles and cuts for you are out there, you just have to take the time to go find them and then individualize them to your taste! If we all just wore what society told us to the world would be a pretty boring place. So get out there and show everyone what your made of!

Michal layering it up and mixing great colors at the same time. You go girl!

It's safe to say I am in love with these Aladdin inspired pants she picked up in Morocco.

Hayley Swan in a precious printed skirt with some serious moccasins.

Jessica Lares went on a ModCloth shopping spree and acquired these who beauties, a burnt orange midi skirt and a classy green dress with cutouts and a natural waist.

I love Sean's hair too much to not show the world. Mohawk with some bleach blonde and purple! Pulling. It. Off.

Sweet Rachel knows how to wear lace the classy way, with a tank underneath!

Jessie put together such a great outfit, bold over sized horizontal stripes on top and some statement skinnys!

I have been obsessing over this picture for a week now so I thought it was time to share. Silhouettes are perfect for cool pictures :)

Shorts on shorts

This new trend of sporting the bike shorts is blowing my mind! I have mentioned it briefly before, but now more and more fashion blogs, and streets style blogs are reflecting it and I think it is time to bring it to the Point Loma campus! This is a quick fix answer to the short short problem we have been seeing around Caf lane. Just throw on a pair of bike shorts under your favorite shorts, or even skirt and you have just added interest and layering into your ensemble that day! You can play it safe with the classic black or amp things up with some textured spandex, like lace or even a print. This is such a fun way to add to your favorite outfit. It also allows you to still wear a pair of shorts or skirt/dress that might be pushing the limit in length. Think of them as extensions for the wardrobe! As we are all anticipating fall, and the new style choices that it presents, this little tip can hold use over until that brisk fall weather gets here! Starting the layering now is a great way to slowly transition into fall style.Hope to see some of you rockin this look on campus this week!

High waisted shorts become more appropriate, and fashion forward when bike shorts are added!

This look is fresh off the cat walk, seen here under skirts.

Such a classy way to wear a lace dress. Start experimenting with layering now!

Another warm weather appropriate alternative to fashion :)

Point Loma State of Mind

Now that the major fashion faux pas have been addressed we are going to start affirming our classmates that are being BOLD enough to dress modestly and fashionably at the same time. I have been seeing a ton of amazing outfits around campus that are beautifully tasteful. This next week I plan to capture these modest moments and share them with you all!

When people are inspired by what I am wearing enough to go home and try something similar themselves I am flattered, and I hope that that is what will result from these photos of Point Loma students! Getting ideas from others is wonderful, and putting your own spin on each style is even better. I hope that you can see that the best fashion trends are the ones that glorify our Father, and respect the bodies He blessed us with.

The Word of the Lord...Thanks be to God!

1 Timothy 2:9

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control...

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Romans 12:1-2
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 9:27

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

1 John 2:15-17

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Leave something up to the imagination...

Sheer fashion is one of my favorite new looks of the season. To my dismay there are too many girls out there who just don't know how to wear it right, but that's what I'm here for! There are so many new versions of sheer wear out there. You can choose from tops or blouses to dresses, and skirts. The key thing to remember is the layering effect that NEEDS to happen. I would like to say that this is a mandatory part of having the privileged to wear sheer. And YES, it is a privilege, not a right because not everyone can pull it off. So if you count yourself one of those fashionistas that is eligible to include sheer in her wardrobe, please proceed with care.
When wearing a sheer top or blouse choose a tank top or a short sleeve to wear underneath. Depending on your style/mood that day you can choose a neutral color or go with a bright hue that adds some interesting contrast. Sometime I even like to throw in a printed undershirt with a plain sheer top just for fun! When wearing a sheer skirt or dress you MUST wear a pencil skirt underneath. This is for your own good. Pencil skirts work best because they are fitted and won't get in the way, or distract from the movement of the skirt. Sometimes with sheer skirts I like to wear a pair of bike shorts or leggings underneath. This way you don't have to worry about the skirt being too short all day and it is a new look that not too many people are wearing...YET that is. Last thing about the skirts, sometimes when you buy a sheer skirt it comes with an opaque skirt already attached. If you are tall like me those skirts do nothing, please do not be afraid to cut that one out or tuck it into another pencil skirt that is an appropriate length.
Since the start of school I have had several guys ask me why girls are wearing see through clothes, they are concerned for you ladies and are shocked by what they are seeing, and not in a good way. Please cover yourselves up, there are plenty of ways to be edgy and get attention that don't play with the boundaries of nudity ;)
