Re-Post from Darling Magazine

Darling is a Magazine that is close to my heart and this article was too good not to share...Enjoy!!!
Nothing Sacred: Physical Immodesty

I live in a culture of immodesty. I grew up here.
When we hear the word “modesty,” we usually associate it with the way a woman dresses, but it does not just manifest in the way we present our bodies; it has bled into the emotional and verbal realms of who we are as individuals as well. It leaves me wondering: Is anything sacred? In this article, the first of three, we will be looking at physical immodesty.
We need a change of perspective. I don’t want to keep hearing about why the girl on the cover of Maxim is there. Who can really know the answer to that question? However, I can tell you the message it sends to many young women: that if they can appeal to someone’s sexual appetite, they will, in turn, be beautiful and desirable. Dealing with why women are marketed the way that they are is a very complex issue that deserves attention, but what I’d like to focus on is the woman as an individual.
Instead of analyzing why a woman dresses more provocatively, it is worth investigating why a woman does not. It is a popular argument to interpret a woman’s physical immodesty as freedom—that it is evidence of her ability to embrace her own sexuality and be proud of her body. The consequence of this perspective is that it sometimes suggests that modesty is a symptom of shame. I would have to argue that modesty makes a woman no more ashamed of her body than asserting nakedness makes her strong in her identity. An attitude that says “this is my body; it belongs to me” is, in fact, a practice of embracing sexuality on a very real level.
When this debate arises, as with anything that includes grey areas, we feel the need to make very clear rules, particularly for teenage girls. How much skin is too much? How many inches from the knee? How tight is too tight? While we believe there should be some definitive lines in this area, (which will be discussed in future Darling articles) sometimes it’s hard to chisel out a formula when the heart of the issue should be the intent behind how we dress. There should be “modesty lines” for every woman, yet some of the smaller lines may differ from one woman to the next dependent on body type and other physical factors—but the key question is whether a woman is allowing herself to be objectified or objectifying herself.
What is challenging about this question, is that just like the girl on the Maxim cover, no one can answer that question for anyone else. After we have accepted that, we can move on to the next hurdle which is something we have all been guilty of. If we really want to see women walk in freedom from objectification, then it is imperative that we stop chaining women in our own judgment. Division only further alienates us from the people that we are called to love and accept. It is not our responsibility to tear down a woman that thinks differently than we do. Culture will never change that way.
Ask yourself if you consider your body and your sexuality sacred. If the answer is yes, then ask yourself how that reality changes the way you treat it. Speak truth about worth and identity to the women that you have been given the privilege to call friends and family. This is the precious seed that has the potential to grow into redefining modesty in a culture. The physical beauty of a woman is to be celebrated, respected, and awed, but more than that, it is to be valued. It is a gift for who she has given it to.
In the next article of this series, we will take a look at how the concept and practice of immodesty affects our speech, and in turn, our relationships.

Fa la la la FALL!

Fall is finally here! With that exciting announcement comes a plethora of new style options. This time of year is all about layering, bundling, and of course boots. Some people have a separate wardrobe for this time of the year, but if you do not fall into that category I might be able to offer a few fashionable tips! Layering really is where its all at. If you have a favorite summer dress that you still want to wear all you have to do it add to it to create the perfect fall ensemble. Sometimes I like to throw a long sleeve on under the dress or a cardigan over top. Wearing a pull over sweater over a dress is becoming very trendy right now. Doing this will result in only skirt of your dress being visible which is great because you just found a new way to style that dress! Wearing tights or leggings and then a pair of boots is a classic fall option. I always like to throw on a scarf or a chunky necklace as well to add interest and texture.
Mixing prints is such a fun way to do fall fashion but you must proceed with caution. I am a fan of mixing florals with stripes but always get a friends second opinion before walking out the door like the world is your runway. Textured or patterned leggings are the best way to express yourself and they can only be work for a few months out of the year so take advantage of this amazing opportunity!
Scarves have been rising in popularity these past few winters and it looks like their hype isn't coming down anytime soon so feel free to jump on that bandwagon. Thick knitted scarves come in all colors and designs. You can buy the traditional tasseled scarves and find hundreds of ways to fashion them, you can also indulge in the slightly more recent infinity scarf! The is a scarf that is a continuous loop which makes scarf wearing much easier. Remember to embrace fall colors, they all go together so well that you can literally just pick a few fall colored pieces out of your closet and you will have a beautiful autumnal outfit ready to go. Now get out there and jump on some crunchy leaves!

Jenna is wearing neutral bottoms with a dainty lace blouse and a sea foam green cardigan.

Rings are the best especially in excess!

Jessica is wearing a sheer black dress with a mini skirt hemline underneath a sheer skirt.

Lisa is sporting a new fall coat! Neutral coats a a great choice, you can always style them up with a colorful scarf.

All black with a pop of cheetah!

Tights for fall!

Sweater are alway a good choice :)

Enrich your life darling!

This has been a week FULL of God's blessings. I strive to live life and not just make it through. That is why I take risks for our Heavenly Father, instead of just waiting for things to happen. I have been working on a business plan and presentation for a high fashion Christian clothing company that I want to start after graduation for a few months now and Tuesday night was PLNU's Entrepreneurial Enrichment Program Exposition Night. I got the chance to talk about my vision for this business and meet mentors that will help my make my dream a reality! This was a really nerve racking process but I felt so confident in Gods grace and peace and that the work I was doing was His. I was amazed at the positive feedback I received and continue to receive for this business idea. I actually have a blog dedicated to Clothe the Naked, which is what I plan on naming my company, check it out here! http://clothethenakedkb.blogspot.com

My supervisor at work showed me an amazing new magazine the other day called Darling, and I think it has changed my life. It is comprised up of everything I love, and a lot of what this blog is about! It is a magazine displaying the art of women, it has beautiful photography, and articles that range from modest fashion, to cooking, to advice. There is something for everyone, and I really think that this magazine will bring back the class women are called to poses and allow all women to see the beautiful gifts that they are. PLEASE  check it out online and order it if you are interested!

Guimel and Victoria @Flood Church
These sister always look great and have been gifted with the height of supermodels. I really appreciate Victoria's shocking pink pants. These style of cotton lounge pants are making a comeback! They are comfortable and cool.

Jenora scored these adorable high waisted shorts at a second hand store! That is what I call a true shopper. They are definitely the focal point of this outfit and are such a great length! The thin braided belt is the perfect element to separate the blouse from the bottoms.

Proverbs 31:25
"She is clothed in strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."

I snuck this picture of my beautiful roommate Keeley in our dorm room :) She is wearing a tribal knitted sweater that she has layered over a neutral tank top.

Rosealie is never without an element of chic. She is wearing an azul sleeveless top with a peplum (lower part of blouse that flares out). This blouse cinches at the natural waist which is a very flattering silhouette on all body types.

*When wearing a top with a peplum or any excess amount of fabric at the hips it is important that you wear tailored or form fitting bottoms. Rosalie's pants work perfect here as would a pencil skirt.

As if you weren't already completely in love with the front of this blouse, the back was constructed with a very appropriate cut out and tie. This adds interest and a unique fashion forward element to the blouse.

Courteney has improved upon an already gorgeous floral dress! She layered this look with a sleeveless cardigan and then belted it all at the waist to create her desired silhouette. Great Job Courters!

* If you love dresses like I do but don't think they are fall appropriate think again! Layering summer dresses like this one with sweaters, tights, scarves, and boots creates a beautiful fall look.

This was my presentation board for my EEP (Entrepreneurial Enrichment Project) this week.

Shadwa is exemplifying the POP of color technique here. She has taken a lace textured tank, tucked it into a high waisted black skirt and added the turquoise necklace as the focal point. It is am amazingly classy outfit that would stand by itself perfectly but that necklace completes the look!

The front and back cover of Darling magazine

An article in Darling magazine. This is an amazing excerpt from this article...

Modesty is a word that is often cast aside in our society, or looked at as old fashioned or prude.

" I think that the best definition of modesty is having an internal definition of self. When you know who you are and you're happy about it, you don't really have a need to show your body to strangers, or give yourself physically to people that don't care about you. The external signs of what we call modesty- not bragging, not showing off your body too much- those are really the signifiers of modesty, not modesty itself. Real modesty flows inside and out." -Wendy Shalit

Bethany put together one of the best outfits I have seen all week. She had a real bohemian vibe going on with her slouchy tank, maxi skirt, and long necklace. My favorite part was the piece of lace that she tied around her waist!

I have really been focusing on this essence of this phrase this past week and I thought I would share. If you are finding your worth in your busy-ness, take the time to talk to the Lord about how He wants you to spend your time. Remember that rest is a form of worship.

This is just true.

Cole is sporting some handcrafted Japanese inspired pajama bottoms, and a camo t-shirt all on top of a 70's inspired floral chair. This just goes to show if you have confidence in yourself you can pull of ANYTHING!

The More the Merrier: a guide to layering

 Layering is Key.

It is easy just to throw on a dress or a pair of jeans and a top and walk out the door but a truly interesting outfit desires layers. Now we are not just talking about shirt, vest, cardigan kind of layering, but also accessory layering. Right now we might want to practice light layering because of the weather but once the fall breeze kicks in these looks will be your go-to's. These days there is no better way to express yourself than through fashion. All looks go in today's society. If you are into the tailored, more preppy/ professional look you can jump on board with the blazer, tailored shorts, trousers, belted waistlines, peter pan collars and oxfords. If you want to embrace your artsy side you can reach for the chunky sweaters, over sized bags, scarves, and zany colors schemes. Or if your like me you can give them all a try, no ones keeping score! Here are some pictures that I found inspiration in, hope you will too, try something new this week!

Basic button up shirt with a loose pull over sweater, pearls, leggings and oxfords
(Go for an abstract color for the purse or accessories!)

This just looks so cozy and chic at the same time, layer the gold jewelry on one wrist.

Oversized bags are part of the ensemble, opaque tights and booties are the best!

Sheer sweater with a tank underneath = classy to the max, belted high waisted skirt.

Billowy sage blouse tucked into a lace pencil skirt, layered gold bracelets on the wrist.

Layering to the max!Infinity scarf, tank, jean button up, stacked bracelets, lace shorts.

Tailored high waisted pants, tucked in sleeveless blouse.

Beanies! Such a great fall/winter outfit
Peacoat, tights, pleated skirt.

Blazers are the best and class up any outfit!

Have fun with color!

Add a sheer sweater over a button up shirt, the color looks great with shorter necklaces. These shorts make the outfit, such a great color!

Pulling. It. Off.

Renewal week is upon us and I see no reason why we can't work on renewing our styles as well as our souls. I have some great examples of perfected Point Loma fashion here from friends around campus. We are still awaiting fall so getting dressed in the morning might be causing you some frustration. As we all know Point Loma should have a weather forecast all of its own due to unreliable predictions in the past. But take heart and utilize layers! Throw a cardigan over a t-shirt, or some tights under a skirt or pair of shorts.

This week I am really appreciating the skirt lengths I am seeing. The midi or a skirt that falls to your mid-calf is on its way back into the fashion scene, as well as the maxi (full length skirt) which we have been seeing for a few months now. I am always in awe of people that take risks in fashion, when you throw together stripes and florals or a muted top with statement bottoms. I especially stop and stare when I see something fabulous that I would have never come up with! Vests and over sized, sleeveless cardigans are such a great accessory to add to any outfit. I am also a big fan of necklace layering, if you can't decide which necklace to wear no worries, wear both! The high waisted silhouette is being see in everyday wear and I am so jazzed about that! It is a classic look that is making a comeback and is very flattering to most body types.

Go through your closet and discover something that you forgot about or have never had the guts to wear! Use some of these pictures and tips to put together a new bold outfit. Start layering your garments in new color and print combinations that you have never tried! Always remember to dress for YOUR body type not for the body type that society is advertising. The perfect styles and cuts for you are out there, you just have to take the time to go find them and then individualize them to your taste! If we all just wore what society told us to the world would be a pretty boring place. So get out there and show everyone what your made of!

Michal layering it up and mixing great colors at the same time. You go girl!

It's safe to say I am in love with these Aladdin inspired pants she picked up in Morocco.

Hayley Swan in a precious printed skirt with some serious moccasins.

Jessica Lares went on a ModCloth shopping spree and acquired these who beauties, a burnt orange midi skirt and a classy green dress with cutouts and a natural waist.

I love Sean's hair too much to not show the world. Mohawk with some bleach blonde and purple! Pulling. It. Off.

Sweet Rachel knows how to wear lace the classy way, with a tank underneath!

Jessie put together such a great outfit, bold over sized horizontal stripes on top and some statement skinnys!

I have been obsessing over this picture for a week now so I thought it was time to share. Silhouettes are perfect for cool pictures :)
